In what state is 'insert allow'? [It should be 'true'.]

yes it is true. the insert allowed property is also true.
once i run the form and try to open an LOV it says field is protected against update. i don't have any trigger on form level i.e. all the field have default properties once the form runs.

Strange.

Okay ... something else is 'stuck'.

Make sure that your item is a 'text item', that it is 'enabled', that it is 'keyboard navigable', that 'query only' is 'no', that 'query allowed' is 'yes', that 'update only if NULL' is 'no'. Look at the LOV, check the 'column mapping properties' and make sure that the returned value is going to the field we just checked.

The problem has been solved.
I've explicitly set the propery of the control block in new form instance trigger. i.e. its update and insert allowed properties.
Thanks for your help.
Regards.
