In Oracle versions 7 and 8 there was an init<sid>.ora file where I could modify system parameters, and when I stopped and restarted the database, it would run with the new parameters. How do I do this in Oracle version 9? I cannot find this file, and similiar looking files cannot be opened properly in notepad - I get control characters. Is it done differently in V9 ?

by default in 9i the server uses the spfile< sid >.ora.
you can create a pfile from spfile and vice versa.
so look into documentation for usage of spfile.
