Pfile is the Parameter which poibnted to the init<SID>.ora. Oracle needs this file pointer to start and operate.
SPFILE is the new version of pfile and means "Server Parameterfile". This file is the Pfile translated in machine code. Oracle 9 uses this way to make sure that nobody can change parameters without translating them into DB. But you can set Oracle 9i to use PFile again.
