Hi,

Currently 32 bit Oracle database is running,Now if i install 64-bit Oracle of the same version , can i use the existing database with out migration.

Current Solaris7 - oracle 8.1.6.3 32- bit

Hi,

Yes, it is possible. See Metalink Note:164997.1 - "How to Upgrade a Database from 32 Bit Oracle to 64 Bit Oracle"

To view this note, click "Advanced" next to the search field at top of the MetaLink screen. In Advanced Search Site, ensure DocID and Knowledge Base are selected, and enter entire article number (164997.1) into search field and click Search.

Best regards.

Frank

Yes, you need no conversion, all 32 bit software works properly under 64 bits OS.
But, i dont know the behavior if you install oracle 8i for 64bits....
I do installed oracle8i for 32 bits under solaris 64 bits and everything went on....

best regards.

Yes this is possible. You will need to make all the objects INVALID and recompile them again. There is a script for that (?/rdbms/admin/utlirp.sql)

This is documented in the 32-bit to 64-bit conversion doc. This is needed ONLY because you are changing from 32 to 64 bit.

We went from 81630 32-bit to 81740 64-bit, no probs.
