I have an Oracle 8.16 database running on a Windows 2000 server. The database was healthy until last week. In the listener log I have the following errors "service_died * ptmn *12537"
"(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=ptmn.world))
"TNS-12514: TNS:listener could not resolve SERVICE_NAME given in connect descriptor"
The database has gone down three times in the last week. I have not made any changes to the TNS or Listener files. Please help.

Please Verify the Host string that u r providing while connecting to oracle.. If u are trying to rum oracle from the server, You should not get this error.. Lets see what others will say abt this.. by the Way , is u r Listener getting started.. If not check the SID name, port etc details that u have provided in the listener.ora file.

If you are getting :

"TNS-12514: TNS:listener could not resolve SERVICE_NAME given in connect descriptor"

and it was working last week and you didn't change anything, then someone else did. Check with your network guys for any DNS or IP address changes.

Try to ping your db server from outside by both name and ip address. Try nslookup both hostname and ip address. Try to use ip address in the tnsnames.ora instead of hostname.

There is a possibility the port 1521 to be filtered by firewall, too. What about sqlnet.ora file? Did you change anything there - as SQLNET.DEFAULT_DOMAIN ??

Hope that helps,
