Does Oracle8i/9i have functions that allow the DBA to send messages to connected users? For example: warning users to logoff as that DBA can shutdown the database? thx.

If any of such kind is available, I WOULD LOVE THAT.
All we can do is , create a before shutdown trigger,
to flag something to OS ( create a file or something like that).
Anyhow the Actual warnng can be sent only by the OS.

Your client could be anything -- Web, sqlplus, C (OCI), JDBC, ODBC etc. so the client needs to be listening for the message.
