This is NOT a database question. It depends on your application, ask the developers.
I suspect Oracle are after charging you money, if thats the best they can come up with. Change from one DBMS to another with not redesign alway will have it's issues.
Anyway, so you have wasted space the cost of the hardware is far less than the cost fixing the problem?
I would only change things as part of the application developement cycle.
