I can't seem to get the DB to use my new init.ora file it always reverts to some default config. I have checked evey .ora file I can find to no avail. I specify at startup the correct init.ora, but it seems to ignore it and use the default settings anyway.

very ODD!!!!
whats the version of oracle?
with 9i we have something called as spfile.
copy the initsid.ora to a very different location.
and do the changes.
connect to svrmgrl ( with 9i no svrmgrl).
svrmgrl> startup open pfile='newlocationinitsid.ora'

This has happened to be once before. The DBA before me had put a copy of the init.ora file in the /usr/bin folder. Took me some time to figure out.

Start off with searching the complete drive, starting at root, for the initSID.ora file.

cd /
find . -name initSID.ora

(or do similarly in NT)
